The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

Walk down any Brighton street — the North Laine, the Lanes, or the stretch of Western Road heading towards Hove — and you can tell within seconds which food businesses are thriving. It is rarely the biggest premises or the fanciest fit-out that catches the eye. More often, it is the shop that tells you something useful before you've even reached the door: what's today's soup, which pastries just came out of the oven, whether there's a table free for a quick coffee.
Good signage for a café or small food shop is not about shouting. It is about answering the questions a hungry passer-by is already asking, at the exact moment they are asking them. Get that right and your frontage becomes your hardest-working member of staff.
Before you order anything, spend ten minutes writing down the three things you most want a passing customer to know. For most independents, that list looks something like this:
Everything else is decoration. A sign that tries to communicate all three of those points in one cramped panel usually communicates none of them. Layering is far more effective: a permanent shopfront sign for identity and opening hours, a window graphic for the headline offer, and a chalkboard for whatever changes by the day.
Cafes in Brighton tend to have generous glazing, whether they're on a seafront corner or tucked into a narrow Lanes frontage. That glass is prime advertising space, and it is easy to under-use.
Permanent window graphics — cut vinyl lettering, frosted panels, printed logos — give you a professional finish that survives both weather and time. Use them for the things that never change: your name, your opening hours, your coffee roaster, a line about the food you serve. Frosted bands at eye level are also a neat way to keep a little privacy for customers inside while still looking welcoming from the street.
For anything seasonal or promotional, temporary window posters and cling graphics are the better bet. They peel away cleanly, so you can promote a summer drinks list in July and a soup-and-sandwich deal in November without leaving residue or spending a fortune.
A word of practical advice: leave at least a third of your glass completely clear. People want to see in, and a fully covered window reads as closed even when you're trading.
If you only invest in one piece of changeable signage, make it a chalkboard. Nothing else lets you update a daily special in thirty seconds with a damp cloth and a stick of chalk.
Chalkboards work hardest in three places:
Keep the wording short and concrete. "Today: carrot and coriander soup, £4.50" beats "Delicious homemade soups available" every single time. Write larger than feels natural — you are reading it from two metres away at walking pace.
Blackboards with a wooden frame suit most independent food shops, but don't feel you have to stick to black. Deep green, navy and burgundy boards look smart and hide chalk smudges better than pure black.
Brighton gets its fair share of wind, and anything freestanding needs to be able to cope with it. A heavy, water-resistant A-board with a proper hinge and a broad base is worth the extra cost; the cheap ones end up in the road on a blustery Tuesday.
Printed banners come into their own for short, specific pushes: a new breakfast menu, a delivery service, a pop-up evening event, a market stall. PVC banners with eyelets can be fixed to railings, hung inside a window recess or strung across a courtyard. For regular outdoor use, ask for a heavier weight of material and reinforced edges — salt air and UV light are unforgiving.
If you trade at Brighton's street markets, festivals or food events, consider a lightweight pull-up banner as well. It packs into a bag, sets up in under a minute, and immediately makes a trestle table look like a proper business rather than a hobby.
Not all signage is about persuading people in. Once they're inside, clear information keeps service moving and reduces questions at the till.
Useful pieces to have in rotation include printed menu boards above the counter, table menus that can be wiped clean, allergen and dietary notices displayed where customers actually look, and small shelf-edge cards naming what's in each display case. If you sell takeaway, an outdoor menu box mounted near the door saves staff repeating the same ten words all afternoon.
Print menus in batches that match how often your offering changes. A seasonal reprint two or three times a year is usually cheaper than constantly patching over old prices.
Brighton's sea air is lovely for a walk and hard on signage. Salt, damp and strong sunlight all take their toll, so it pays to specify materials with that in mind.
Whatever you choose, build in a ten-minute weekly check. Wipe the boards, straighten the A-board, make sure last week's special isn't still on display. Signage that looks cared for tells customers the kitchen is cared for too — and that is the message that keeps small food shops busy, season after season.

Placement affects how many people see your banner. Consider sightlines, footfall, planning rules and neighbouring businesses before choosing a prominent location.

Hems and eyelets determine how well a banner wears. Compare reinforced edges, brass eyelets and rope finishes for outdoor and event use.
