Using Banners to Promote Seasonal Offers Locally

Using Banners to Promote Seasonal Offers Locally

Why seasonal banners still earn their place in Brighton

Brighton rewards businesses that are visible at street level. Between the seafront, the North Laine, The Lanes, Kemptown and the London Road corridor, thousands of people pass the same corners every day — on foot, on bikes, on the bus. A seasonal banner speaks to those people at exactly the moment they are deciding where to spend their money.

Unlike a social post, a banner cannot be scrolled past. It works on people who are already nearby, already hungry, already browsing, already thinking about a gift or a haircut or a coffee. What it needs from you is a clear message, a sensible location and a date that gives people a reason to act now rather than eventually.

Getting the message right before you print

Seasonal offers succeed when they are easy to absorb in three seconds. That is roughly how long a driver paused at a junction or a walker on the promenade will give you. Aim for six to eight words as the main line, with the price and the deadline as the hook.

  • One offer only. "Two courses for £15, Sunday to Thursday" beats a list of five deals.
  • Add urgency. "Ends Sunday", "While stocks last" or "This week only" turns interest into a visit.
  • Say where you are. A street name, a landmark or a simple arrow does more work than a logo.
  • Use high contrast. Bold colours and heavy type read well against Brighton's grey winter skies and bright summer glare alike.
  • Make the call to action scannable. If you use a QR code, keep it at least 30cm square on a large banner so it works from two metres away.

Timing your campaign around the Brighton calendar

Seasonal promotion is a scheduling exercise as much as a design one. Allow five to ten working days for printing, longer if you need bespoke frames, brackets or a large-format install. Put banners up a week before the offer starts so people have time to plan, and take them down before they start to look tired or misleading.

The local rhythm is fairly predictable. January resolutions, Valentine's Day, Easter and the school holidays, the Brighton Marathon in April, the Festival and Fringe through May, the long seafront summer, Pride in August, freshers' weeks in September, Halloween, then the Christmas lights and late-night shopping run through to Boxing Day. Match your offer to the footfall that is already there rather than trying to create it from nothing.

Siting, permissions and the rules that catch people out

Placement is where most campaigns either shine or stumble. On your own frontage or private land, you generally have freedom, though you should still check your lease or freeholder's terms before attaching anything to a shared wall or railing. On council land — verges, parks, the seafront and many pavement areas — you will usually need permission from the local authority, and applications take weeks rather than days.

  • Pavement licences cover many freestanding signs and A-boards, and usually require a clear pedestrian route.
  • Conservation areas such as The Lanes, North Laine and the Regency squares bring extra scrutiny, so ask early.
  • Never attach to street furniture — lampposts, railings, trees or bins — without consent. It can be removed and you may be charged for it.
  • Check your insurance. Freestanding banners and weighted bases should be covered by public liability, especially in windy spots.

If you are in a shared building or a business park, get written agreement from the landlord or managing agent. It is a five-minute email that prevents an awkward removal request later.

Choosing materials that survive the sea air

Brighton's weather is not gentle. Salt, UV and a stiff south-westerly will find every weakness in a cheap banner. For short campaigns, a standard PVC banner with welded hems and eyelets every 50cm is fine. For exposed seafront positions, mesh is the better choice because wind passes through it rather than tearing at the edges.

  • Use bungee cord rather than rope so the banner flexes instead of ripping.
  • Weight freestanding frames with water bases or sandbags, and take them in overnight if strong winds are forecast.
  • Ask for UV-resistant inks or a protective laminate if the banner will be up for more than a couple of months.
  • Consider PVC-free and recyclable substrates if sustainability matters to your customers — it often does in Brighton.

Measuring the results and making the banner work twice

A banner is only expensive if you cannot tell whether it worked. Give each campaign its own offer code, a dedicated seasonal landing page or a simple question at the till: "How did you hear about us?" A modest uplift in redemptions tells you which location and which wording to repeat next season.

Photograph the banner in place while it is clean and well lit — those images are useful for social media, local press and next year's planning. When the campaign ends, clean the banner, let it dry fully, roll it rather than folding it, and store it flat. Vinyl creases and cracks along fold lines, and a crease down the middle of your best-performing offer is a waste of money you have already spent.

If you have a permanent frame, rotate two designs so regular passers-by notice the change. Refresh faded colours before they undermine the offer, and keep a simple record of what ran where and when. After a full year of seasonal banners, you will have a clear picture of which corners, messages and moments bring people through your door.
